01 - Icon tutorial

This is a simple (somewhat xD) icon colouring tutorial. You'll need Photoshop CS+ for this one~ I was using Photoshop CS3

Okay so first thing's first. You get your base. I used this lovely pictures of Yesung ^^. Make sure your base has a dark background and there are a lot of warm colours, cool colours don't really work for this tutorial.

STEP ONE

Duplicate your base. Then use a high pass filter (Filter > Other > High Pass) on the duplicate. Change the blending mode to Overlay at 60% opacity.

STEP TWO

Add a curves layer (Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves)

Settings
RGB:
1st point: 49 54
2nd point: 123 127
3rd point: 179 179

Red:
1st point: 98 100

Blue:
1st point: 0 0
2nd point: 138 152

Green:
1st point: 125 110
2nd point: 180 153

STEP THREE

Okay so this looks a bit too saturated, so we're going to de-saturate it. Add a Hue/Saturation layer (Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation).

Settings
Master: 0, -8, 0

STEP FOUR

Now we add a Channel Mixer Layer (Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Channel Mixer).

Settings
Red: +96, 0, 0
Blue: 0, -8, +100
Green: 0, +100, 0

This might look a bit yellowish, but we'll change that soon enough ;]

STEP FIVE

Next is another Curves Layer.

Settings

Red:
1st point: 111 119

STEP SIX

One more Curves layer. I swear this is the last one XD

Settings
Green:
1st point: 106 131

See? Most of the Green/Yellow is gone~!

STEP SEVEN

Add a Photo Filter Layer (Layer > New Adjustment Layer >Photo Filter)
Settings
Choose the Filter option. Cooling Filter (80) is the one you want from the drop list. Set the density to 60%. This is to create a cool effect and darken his hair a bit.

STEP EIGHT

Add a Gradient Map (Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Gradient Map).
So you want your first colour to be #eda6a6 and your second colour to be #d5d5d5. Make sure dither and reverse are unchecked. Set the blending mode of your gradient map to Color Burn and the master opacity to %100.

STEP NINE

Now we add an Exposure layer! (Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Exposure)
Settings
Exposure: +0.75
Offset: 0
Gamma Correction: 2.00

And we are done. I hope you learned something new today xD
